We’re back! After a long hiatus (involving real-life gainful employment) Red Ampersand has risen, phoenix-like, from the ashes.

Strangely appropriate, perhaps, that the word phoenix reaches us, via Old French and Latin, from the ancient Greek word relating to the purple-red dye of Phoenicia, in turn from the word for ‘blood-red’, phoinos. Celebrated here with Professor Dumbledore’s pet phoenix, Fawkes.*

Do get in touch to discuss any work you’d like us to take on. We’ll be here preening our feathers.

Hello, all! Although this is the point of contact for my editorial services, I’ll also be posting on here as a friend of all things related to the written word. You’ll probably see me especially enthused about typography and font history, physics (particularly astronomy), and contemporary literature, with an emphasis on poetry.

Speaking of the latter, please do feel free to hunt down a copy of Cake magazine, the literary journal of which I am co-founder and Poetry Editor. We’re print-based, and very pretty, but we’re also rolling out online content on our website, which resides here. If you’d rather behold the physical artefact, you can find us on the shelf at the Cake magazine, Issue 2 (2010)Poetry Library at the Southbank Centre, or can pick up a copy for a mere £5 (not bad, for seventy pages of poetry, short fiction and literary reviews) through the Buy link on our website.

Time for lunch, now. I’m currently engaged in a truly epic (well, six days) duel with man-flu. Unusual, as I am a woman. New post tomorrow; the observant among you will have noticed an Oxford comma in this post, the use of which I’ll be vociferously defending. Hats on, debate-team.
